The Spanish-backed Loligo squid fishing fleet operating in the Falkland Islands has reversed a poor 2025 season, surpassing last year's total catch.

The fleet landed over 10,000 tons in its second season of this year, compared to 38,000 tons in its first, bringing its total catch to over 48,000 tons, surpassing the 2024 total.

There had been concerns that the season would end early, but fishing continued through most of August. The fleet still holds its permit, but the season could be terminated at any time if fishing efficiency declines. The fleet's average daily catch is currently 20 tons per vessel.

Unlike 2024, when no second season was held, this year's catch was more evenly distributed, resulting in better-sized squid. Despite catches remaining on par with last year, the industry still considers 2025 to be a weak year overall, with total catches roughly half of peak-year levels.

However, industry insiders say that following scientific advice and waiting for a larger squid run are key factors in achieving a successful fishing season.
